Fishing with Grist Haven Lodge

Most lodges offer mid-Spring to mid-Fall Fishing. At Grist Haven Lodge you can fish all year long. This is a great spot for ice fishing during the cold winter months. In the summer, it is a haven for fishermen who want to target Lake Trout and big, Fat Northern Pike.

Because this is Alberta, you must take the boat safety course, which you can do online at: www.boat-ed.com

The lake is deep - reaching 300+ feet in spots. It spans about three miles in length but it offers plenty of opportunities to fish for Whitefish, Lake Trout, and Northern Pike.

The trick to successfully fishing for Lake Trout, which can easily reach 40 pounds or more is to hit the right depth of the lake. Lake Trout are very sensitive to water temperature so as the summer gets warmer the Lake Trout head deeper. In a 300 foot lake, it can be challenging to find them. Once you do, it's game on because Lake Trout like to feed.

If you have never fished for Nothern Pike you should. Pike are big and aggressive and they love to gulp down smaller fish. You often find them along the shore in shallow water and in areas where there are a lot of water plants. They hide in the water plants waiting for a meal to swim past. These are great fish for both fly fishing and spin casting. You will want to toss a couple of steel leaders into your tackle box if you fish for pike, They have over 700 razor sharp teeth in their mouth.

Lodging with Grist Haven Lodge

The lodge is where you head for relaxing in their comfortable living room or by the fire. There is a licensed lounge with Satellite TV and the place is pet-friendly.

Guests stay in one of the many cabins along the shores of Grist Lake. The cabins are cozy with bathrooms, showers, and heat. Outside of each cabin is a BBQ and inside is a fully equipped kitchen. Guests bring their own food, bedding, and towels. The lodge is open year-round and makes a great location for winter cross country skiing.
