The Sportsman's Lodge sits along the shores of Little Vermilion Lake which is just north of Red Lake in the Ontario wilderness. Little Vermillion Lake is an excellent watershed for Walleye and big fat Northern Pike. In addition to the main lodge, there are three outpost camps which offer even more peace, quiet, and pristine fishing waters. For guests with their own plane, the Red Lakes Airport offers a 5,000-foot paved strip.

Lodging with Sportsman's Lodge

At the main lodge, guests stay in clean and comfortable cabins that feature daily maid service, comfortable beds, linens, blankets and even towels. Each cabin has a full kitchen, wood heaters, and plenty of hot and cold running water. Bathrooms include a three piece unit with shower. There is electricity available 24-7 and even satellite Internet.

The outpost cabins feature large fully-equipped kitchens with fridge and freezer. Outdoor cooking options including fish fryers, and BBQ. Cabins feature two-bedroom floor plans with bunk beds, comfortable mattresses, hot and cold running water, shower and indoor plumbing. There is even a satellite phone in case of emergency.

Overall, expect a well-cared-for outfit with clean accommodations, and outstanding fishing.

Fishing with Sportsman's Lodge

Guests fish from 16-foot boats with Yamaha 4-stroke engines that are in top condition at the main lodge and from 14-foot boats at the outpost cabins. While the main lodge offers outstanding fishing, the outposts offer a more remote setting on lakes that are not fished heavily. What this means for anglers is that you have a better chance of battling big trophy fish. The lodge practices a conservation policy so limits and size limits are in effect.

In terms of fish size, expect Walleye in the 10-22 inch range to be fairly common while trophies grow even larger. All Walleye over 22-inches in length are catch and release. Walleye grow to 24 inches here and there are opportunities for 30-inch fish.

For Northern Pike, fish to the 30-inch mark are common and trophies above 30 inches are catch and release only. It is not uncommon to battle Pike in the 30-45 inch range.

Whether you choose the main camp or an outpost cabin, fishing here is easy and outstanding. The larger number of big fish, thanks to the lodge's conservation policy helps ensure that guests of the lodge have a memorable fishing expedition.
